Over 80% of the Sub-Saharan Africa as well as over half the populations of India and China, depend heavily on inefficient traditional biomass (fuel wood, charcoal, animal dung), for heat, cooking and other basic necessities. Using biomass as an energy source increases CO2 emissions, accelerates deforestation and kills an estimated 1.5 million people each year.

Biomass is also expensive. Poor families in developing countries spend at least ten dollars per month 25% of their income—on biomass fuels.
