Product Development Management Team

  • Todd Dalland, President, Chief Design Officer, Co-Founder: Mr. Dalland began his career in 1971 designing and building tensile structures and established FTL Design Studio in 1977.

Mr. Dalland has been instrumental, both in his design work and in his professional and academic involvements in advancing a design and construction "language" for fabric structures. The development of this coherent "language" has enabled the transfer of knowledge of this design and construction process from the industry pioneer to the current design community. Mr. Dalland's patents and licenses for tensioned membrane structure designs cumulatively represent billions of dollars in sales of manufactured products.

Mr. Dalland is a founding Executive Committee member of the Architectural Fabric Structures Institute and a founding Director of Surface Forms Research Group. His most recent projects include Large Shelter System (LSS) with Vertigo, Inc. for the United States Air Force (high-pressure air beams); Advanced Inflatable Airlock (AIA) for EVA for the Space Shuttle with Honeywell for NASA; Modular General Purpose Tent System (MGPTS) with JOI for the United States Army; Other significant projects include the AT&T Global Olympic Village and the Olympic Centennial Park in Atlanta.

Mr. Dalland was elected to Fellowship by the American Institute of Architects in 1996 for his contributions to design in architecture. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Architecture.

  • Robert Lerner, Vice President, Chief Technology Officer, Co-Founder: Mr. Lerner joined FTL Design Engineering Studio in 1996 and has been instrumental in developing military, aerospace, commercial and photovoltaic product lines. He has secured SBIR and NYSERDA grants to fund development of photovoltaic structures technology and managed numerous technology development programs for NASA, the United States Army, the United States Air Force and numerous commercial clients. Mr. Lerner has extensive experience with manufacturing, product development, industrial design, and complex program management. Mr. Lerner has developed significant intellectual property assets and has numerous patents and patents pending in the field of tent design and photovoltaic product design. He has received design awards and has published scientific articles on his work for NASA. Mr. Lerner has been recognized by the United States Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) when he was offered a multi-year Partnership contract to support their efforts to improve the industrial base of military tent production in the United States. Mr. Lerner holds an M.Arch. Graduate Professional Degree from the UCLA School of Architecture and is licensed to practice in the State of New York.

  • Richard Schoen, Director, Solar Technology: Mr. Schoen is a Fellow if the American Institute of Architects, a LEED Accredited Professional, and Research Professor Emeritus in the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design where he taught an annual Introduction to Sustainable Architecture and Community Planning course as well as occasional special seminars, such as Implications of the Hydrogen Economy on Land Use and Built Form at the End of Oil, a research practicum largely underwritten by Toyota Motors, USA.

Mr. Schoen is a co-founder of- but has transitioned from his role as Director of Building-Integrated Photovoltaics at Stellar Energy Solutions - a solar photovoltaics installer in Healdsburg, California, to becoming, in 2007 Executive Vice President of Mattergy Solar, a systems integration, installation, and technology consulting firm in New Rochelle, NY, a Stellar Energy sister company. Beginning in January, 2008 he moved for a short time to Pfister Energy of Paterson, New Jersey, where he was Director of New Technology. He has since created an independent consultancy, RSA* Renewable Energy Consulting (*Richard Schoen Associates, Edgewater, New Jersey).

  • Joe Schedlbauer, Director, Structural Engineering: Mr. Schedlbauer was the Principal Engineer of FTL Design Engineering Studio, LLC responsible for the engineering staff, code compliance, structural adequacy and engineering quality control where he handled the following projects: Sun Valley Music Pavilion ID, Rosa Parks Transit Center, Detroit, MI; Lac Mirabel Specialty Structures, CA; Social Security Parking Structure, Birmingham AL; Charlottesville Music Pavilion, VA and City Place Performance, Shell, FL. Previously, Mr. Schedlbauer was the Chief Engineer for Graboplan, Inc where he was in charge of design and engineering for all projects as well as coordinating the efforts of consulting engineers and performing all aspects of fabric structure design and development. Mr. Schedlbauer was the Senior Engineer for Birdair Inc where he was responsible for engineering for fabric structures in Asia, Europe, North and South America. During his 17 years at Birdair, he directed a diverse range of projects, including the Millennium Dome UK.

Mr. Schedlbauer has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University.

  • Dr. Gay Canough, Director, Electrical Engineering: Dr. Canough is the founder of ETM Solar, a solar energy system design and installation firm and the Treasurer of the New York Solar Energy Industries Association (NYSEIA). She is a Certified PV Installer with the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (www.nabcep.org) and a Certified Master Trainer with the Institute for Sustainable Power (www.irecusa.org). Ms. Canough is also a member of the following organizations: the Southern Tier Home Builders and Remodelers Association, the Better Business Bureau, the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce and NYSEIA. Dr. Canough also teaches Solar PV Installation Courses in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey at various organizations including: Binghamton University, the State University of New York and the Watson School of Engineering.

Previously, Dr. Canough managed the start-up of the Lunar Prospector project which successfully orbited the Moon collecting data for two years in 1998-99, and she completed studies of space solar power compared to terrestrial solar power under a NASA contract in 1996. Dr. Canough also taught engineering physics, electronics and particle physics at Binghamton University and the State University of New York from 1990 to 1995 and conducted a study on the risks of space solar power for the Space Studies Institute, Princeton University in 1992.

Dr. Canough has a BS in Physics, Purdue University, 1980 and a Ph.D. in Particle Physics, University of Notre Dame, 1987.
